OB/GYN Medical Billing & Coding Alert
For 2027, Community First Health Plans notified providers on August 3, 2026, about CPT maternity care revisions effective January 1, 2027. The revisions separate antepartum care, labor management, delivery, & postpartum care, & delete several longstanding global maternity package codes.
Community First is still reviewing the revisions. Its notice is an advance awareness communication, and additional billing, reimbursement, and implementation guidance is expected.
OB/GYN Billing and Coding Guidelines
Under the changes, the AMA's 2027 CPT changes establish the revised maternity coding structure. Community First has notified providers of these changes but has not yet released complete payer-specific implementation or reimbursement guidance.
OB/GYN practices should review their billing workflows and continue monitoring future Community First notices.
2027 Maternity Coding Changes
Most importantly, beginning January 1, 2027:
- Antepartum care: Reported using appropriate E/M codes.
- Labor management: Reported separately using new inpatient labor management codes.
- Delivery: Reported separately using revised vaginal and cesarean delivery codes.
- Postpartum care: Reported using appropriate E/M codes.
- Global maternity codes: Numerous existing global maternity package codes will be deleted.

What OB/GYN Practices Should Review Before 2027
Practices can begin reviewing:
- maternity coding and billing workflows;
- EHR and practice-management templates;
- charge capture & claim edits;
- maternity documentation;
- internal coding references;
- fee schedules;
- coder, biller, and clinical staff training.
These are preparation steps, not additional Community First requirements.
What Providers Should Do
Community First advises providers to:
- review the CPT 2027 maternity care revisions;
- assess maternity coding and billing workflows;
- educate coding, billing, and clinical staff;
- monitor future reimbursement and implementation guidance.
Providers should also refer to the AMA CPT 2027 Professional Edition and applicable payer policies for complete coding and billing guidance.
Community First Guidance Still Pending
For now, Community First is still reviewing the CPT revisions and plans to issue additional information as it becomes available. Practices should not assume that reimbursement rules, claim requirements, & implementation details are final until further payer guidance is published.
