Pediatric Billing & Coding Alert

Why do many billers use 92551 for Newborn Hearing Screenings and end up in denials? Avoid denials with the proper CPT code. Correct coding options for newborn and infant hearing screenings.

Answer: While 92551 (Screening test, pure tone, air only) indicates whether a hearing issue may be present, this code should not be used for hearing screenings on newborns or infants.

According to CPT® Assistant (Volume 24: Issue 8): "Although the 92551 (Screening test, pure tone, air only) procedure code can be used for individuals of different ages, it is unsuitable for reporting hearing screenings conducted on newborns and infants."

Which Codes To Use Instead Of 92551?

Instead, use one of the following codes based on the type of screening performed:

  • 92558 (Evoked otoacoustic emissions, screening – qualitative measurement of distortion product or transient evoked otoacoustic emissions, automated analysis):

This test evaluates cochlear status by measuring hair cell function in response to specific tone frequencies. It is commonly used for babies and young children who cannot cooperate with traditional hearing tests.

  • 92650 (Auditory evoked potentials; screening with broadband stimuli, automated analysis):

This screening measures the patient's response to auditory stimuli, recording electrical responses, or auditory evoked potentials. The automated analysis provides a pass-or-fail outcome.

Patients who do not pass these screenings may require further testing to assess the severity or type of hearing loss.
