OB/GYN Medical Billing & Coding Alert
Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, the American Medical Association will update its Maternity Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. The changes will result in the national deletion of many current maternity procedure codes and the creation of new codes.
At the national level, the changes will shift maternity billing from global obstetrical bundles to billing based on distinct services. The revised structure will reflect the current obstetric practice and will facilitate accurate and transparent reporting and maternal care.
The changes will focus on four primary areas of service:
- Prenatal care
- Labor management
- Labor and delivery
- Postpartum care
IHCP Is Reviewing the Maternity Code Changes
The Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) has historically covered global maternity bundles as secondary to commercial insurance coverage. The upcoming maternity CPT changes will have broader implications for the program.
IHCP is aware of the changes and is actively reviewing the policy, reimbursement, and system needs associated with the transition.
IHCP will share additional communications as it continues reviewing the changes and developing updated billing and policy guidance.
Providers should watch for future IHCP publications for additional information regarding the 2027 maternity CPT changes.
BillingFreedom helps Indiana OB/GYN practices stay informed about maternity billing and coding changes. Its experienced medical billing and coding team supports practices as payer requirements and guidance continue to evolve.
