AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire Notice: 2027 Maternity CPT Code Changes (17 Retired, 6 Revised, 12 New)

OB/GYN Medical Billing & Coding Alert

AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire informed its obstetrician/gynecologist and primary care providers prenatal and postpartum CPT coding changes will be instituted on January 1, 2027, on October 1, 2026. The change is due to the AMA's CPT 2027 code set, which phases out the global maternity codes and introduces phase-specific codes. The plan will begin implementing it in accordance with CMS guidance for the Prenatal and Postpartum Care (PPC) HEDIS measure.

For obstetrician/gynecologists and primary care providers, understanding which codes are being retired, revised, and introduced will be important as the new reporting requirements take effect.

What Is Changing in Prenatal and Postpartum Coding?

The coding update will eliminate 17 codes, add 12 codes and update six codes beginning January 1, 2027. It also contains new subsections, new guidelines and changes to the location of some of the existing codes.

Retired Codes

Existing bundled prenatal and postpartum CPT codes will no longer be reported beginning January 1, 2027.

Revised Codes

Six CPT codes will have updated descriptions or reporting requirements under the 2027 coding changes.

New Phase-Specific Codes

Twelve new CPT codes will be introduced to support phase-specific reporting of prenatal and postpartum care services.

System Updates Before January 1, 2027

Providers should coordinate with their billing, coding, and EHR vendors to ensure their systems are updated before the new coding changes take effect.

Benefits of the Coding Updates

CMS reporting expectations and the shift from bundled CPT coding to phase-specific prenatal and postpartum coding is aimed at enhancing reporting accuracy and consistency.

More Accurate Reporting

  • Captures prenatal and postpartum services at the appropriate stage of care.
  • Provides clearer identification of prenatal and postpartum encounters.

More Precise Quality Measurement

  • Supports more precise quality measurement for the Prenatal and Postpartum Care (PPC) measure.
  • Provides more detailed data on prenatal and postpartum care delivery to support maternal health initiatives.

Better Alignment With CMS Guidance

  • Replaces bundled billing codes with phase-specific reporting.
  • Aligns prenatal and postpartum reporting with CMS guidance.

Greater Reporting Consistency

  • Promotes greater consistency in quality reporting across providers, health plans, and reporting programs.
  • Reduces ambiguity by clearly identifying prenatal and postpartum encounters.

What This Means for Your Practice

  • This is the AMA's CPT 2027 maternity restructure, not a plan-specific rule. Expect the same code changes from every payer on January 1, 2027, though each payer sets its own claim-handling rules.
  • The notice does not say how to bill pregnancies that span December 31, 2026: a 2026 delivery with postpartum care in 2027, or prenatal care that began in 2026. Ask your Provider Account Executive before year-end; other payers have already published transition rules.
  • Request the plan's full code list and FAQs, which it has promised “prior to implementation,” and load the new descriptors into your EHR and charge master.
  • Update OB documentation templates to document each prenatal/postnatal encounter as it occurs. This will be the PPC measure that is scored.
  • Questions: your Provider Account Executive, or Provider Services at 1-888-599-1479.

Preparing for the January 1, 2027 Coding Changes

Providers should coordinate with their billing, coding, and EHR partners, and this should be done before January 1, 2027. Review and update systems to reflect the retired, revised, and new CPT II codes included in the coding changes.
